Borough’s first member of the Youth Parliament vows to “make a difference”

The borough’s first member of the UK Youth Parliament, 16-year-old Nomi Tamplin, was voted in this week.

Over 700 youngsters throughout the borough voted online and by using voting slips in their schools.

Cabinet Member for Youth Services, Cllr Hilary Smith, said:

“I would like to offer my congratulations to both of the candidates. It was very brave of them to stand for election. Nomi now has a fabulous opportunity to give the borough’s youngsters a real voice in the democratic process.

“She will attend regular Youth Forum meetings where young people in Richmond upon Thames will debate key issues in the borough. She will then present them to the Youth Parliament.

“Nomi will be supported throughout her term in office by the Council’s Youth Services and her deputy, Cherie Aris. I would like to wish our new MYP and deputy every success."

Nomi said:

“It is an honour to be the first Youth Parliament Member for the borough. It has been an eye-opening experience to go through the election process.

“ If any young people have issues they would like to discuss, I urge them to come along to a Youth Forum meeting.

“I would also like to thank everyone who voted for me. I intend to make the most of this opportunity and really try to make a difference.”
